The Animal
LVDS Mini is an inexpensive expansion board that interfaces to common LVDS LCD displays. This board attaches to the main board's LCD
expansion interface.
The Animal LVDS Mini board works with the following main boards:
- BeagleBoard Rev-C (original BeagleBoard)
- BeagleBoard-xM
- PandaBoard (original PandaBoard)
- PandaBoard ES
The Animal LVDS Mini board provides the following:
- interfaces to common LVDS LCD displays
- LVDS interface via the TI SN75LVDS83B integrated circuit with support for 18-bit and 24-bit 2-LSB mode
- 3.3V I2C interface
- I2C interface for EDID communication
- provides either +5VDC or +12VDC power to the backlight LEDs
- provides a hardware pulse width modulator (PWM) to control the brightness of the LCD's backlight LEDs
- software control of the duty cycle and frequency of the PWM controller
- LED backlight brightness levels from 0 - 255 (8 bit control)
- Maximum pixel clock: 135Mhz
- Maximum recommended resolution: 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz refresh rate
- LCD interface is a standard 40-pin header (2x20) on 0.1" centers
- use inexpensive ribbon cables like the standard 40-pin IDE cable
- board dimensions: 1.5 in x 3.0 in (38.1mm x 76.2mm)
LCD Interface
The Animal LVDS Mini board used a standard 40-pin header (2x20) on 0.1 inch centers for the LCD interface. You can use inexpensive ribbon cables to extend the interface from 6 inches to 36 inches. Common 40-pin IDE cables will work.

Powering the Animal LVDS Mini board
The Animal LVDS Mini board can be power by any one of the following methods:
- Power is supplied by the +5VDC power coming from the main board (default setting)
- +5VDC power can be supplied by an external power supply - there are two large solder pads where you can solder the external power directly onto the board
- +5VDC power can also be supplied by an external power supply - there is a 2.1 mm (center positive) barrel jack on the pc board.
Each Animal LVDS Mini board comes with a set of mounting hardware consisting of:
- Two (2) 7/32" board spacers
- Two (2) 3/4" board standoffs
- Three (3) 1" board standoffs
- Five (5) screws (#4-40 x 1/2 inch machine screw)

20-pin Female Headers - These connectors have to be soldered into the LCD expansion port. These connectors are required on the following boards: PandaBoard, PandaBoard-ES, BeagleBoard Rev-C. (They are not required on the BeagleBoard-xM).
22 Ohm Resistors - This cut piece of tape contains approximately 50 pieces of 0402 22 Ohm resistors. These resistors have to be soldered onto the back side of the original PandaBoard. (These are only required if you have an original Pandaboard - they are not required on Beagleboard or PandaBoard-ES).
20445 LVDS Adapter Board
The 20445 LVDS Adapter board provides a conversion from a standard 40 pin ribbon cable to a I-PEX 20445 LVDS connector. The LVDS connector allows you to plug in a standard 40-pin LVDS cable that will then connect to the LVDS connector on the back of standard LVDS LCD's.
